Mixed Media

Today was a special day in Room 13 – selected students were able to come and complete a project that involved staying the entire day.  We explored mixed media and creating texture in 2D work using modelling paste, tissue paper and pieces of string.  We also used stenciling, drawing, mono print and ‘lino cut’ (polystyrene safety boards) in the work to create variety.  We started the morning by drawing outdoors a flower or piece of grass – eyes closed, holding the object in our hand and drawing by touch rather than sight.  The children find it incredibly difficult to let go and make any kind of abstract work, feeling that it must always be very representational.  But we discussed all this and I think they got a lot out of the process, they were finally able to let go and draw with their eyes firmly shut!
