Enrichment & Progression at The Mill

At The Mill, enrichment is an essential part of every child’s journey. We believe that learning beyond the classroom helps pupils develop confidence, resilience, creativity and social skills, while preparing them for life both inside and outside school.

Our enrichment opportunities are carefully planned to build on previous experiences and ensure clear progression as children move through the school. Every activity, project and leadership role is designed to help pupils explore interests, take on challenges, develop independence, and contribute positively to their school and wider community.

Progression Across the School

  • Early Years & Key Stage 1: Pupils are introduced to a range of experiences to explore interests and develop social and emotional skills.
Examples: Forest School sessions, early music groups, initial Bike Shed activities, and participation in calm spaces like NEST.

  • Lower Key Stage 2: Children begin to take on more responsibility and apply the skills they have learned.
Examples: Joining Room 13 projects, producing content for Millers Radio, participating in small leadership roles, and developing practical skills in Bike Shed.

  • Upper Key Stage 2: Older pupils have opportunities to lead initiatives, mentor younger children, and contribute to school and community projects.
Examples: Head Boys and Girls, ECO Council, Wellbeing Ambassadors, Room 13 Committee, music performances, and presenting podcasts to the school and wider community.

How Opportunities are Planned

Enrichment at The Mill is designed to ensure that:

  • Activities build on prior learning and experiences

  • Pupils develop character, social and emotional skills

  • Creativity, teamwork, and independence are nurtured

  • Children with additional needs or exceptional talents are supported and challenged

Impact of Enrichment

  • Pupils gain confidence and independence through hands-on experiences such as Forest School, Bike Shed, and Room 13.

  • Creative and communication skills flourish through music, art, and Millers Radio.

  • Leadership, responsibility, and teamwork grow through pupil leadership roles and collaborative projects.

  • Emotional resilience and self-regulation are supported through NEST and structured social experiences.

  • Clear progression is evident, with pupils taking on increasing responsibility and sharing their achievements with the school and wider community.

Everyday Enrichment

Enrichment is embedded throughout the school day and week. It is not just an “extra” but a core part of learning and school life:

  • Leadership roles and responsibilities are integrated into classroom and school projects

  • Outdoor learning and Forest School are part of the regular timetable

  • Music, art, media, and other creative opportunities are woven into the curriculum

  • Pupils are encouraged to share their ideas, talents, and projects with the school community

At The Mill, enrichment is a journey – helping every child grow, discover, and thrive at their own pace while preparing them for the next stage of their learning and life.
